Anthropic transfers Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation
Anthropic is donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation after adoption by more than 70 platforms.
Anthropic announced on October 22 that it is donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation. The transfer places the standard for packaging agent instructions under a foundation within the Linux Foundation.
The company said more than 70 platforms support the format, including Cursor, ChatGPT, VS Code and GitHub Copilot. Anthropic is transferring its branding, GitHub organization and dedicated domain. It said developers have published 1 million skills, with installations approaching 280 million.
Skills package task instructions with supporting scripts and reference materials. Anthropic developed the approach for Claude Code, introduced it in October 2025 and published an open standard that December. The shared format lets developers supply procedural knowledge across compatible agents.
Engineers from several companies will maintain the specification in an individual capacity, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag leading that work. Anthropic proposed a roadmap addressing release versions, a structured process for changes and security guidance. Participation will remain open without foundation membership.
