Nvidia pledges $250 million in computing access for UK AI safety research

Nvidia will provide computing resources worth $50 million annually for five years to support British research into AI safety and security.

Nvidia announced a $250 million commitment of computing resources on October 14 to support British AI safety research. The five-year program will provide access valued at $50 million each year, rather than cash grants.

Most of the commitment will serve researchers across the UK. A portion will support Oxford's BOLD lab, UCL's SOFAIR lab and Imperial College London. Their work covers learning systems, open AI architectures and robotics safety.

The initiative focuses on safeguards for AI agents and security risks involving open models. Nvidia said research will include controlled testing environments and benchmarks for evaluating safety. It extends the company's existing British research relationships, including its involvement in Bristol's Isambard-AI supercomputer.

Computing access will come through Nvidia's UK cloud partners using infrastructure located in Britain. The company said providers, system designs and commercial arrangements still need to be agreed.
