Jensen Huang says he would accept a potential $8 billion California tax bill

Nvidia's CEO described the ability to pay billions in taxes as a privilege as California prepares to vote on a proposed billionaire wealth tax.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he would accept a potential $8 billion tax obligation spread across five years if California approves its proposed billionaire levy. In an interview, he described having the resources to pay that amount as a privilege and a responsibility. His remarks concerned a possible future obligation, not an announced payment.

Huang credited opportunities in the United States with helping him obtain an education and become an entrepreneur. He said poverty worried him more than taxation and expressed willingness to contribute more as his success grows.

California's Proposition 40 would impose a single levy of 5% on covered taxpayers whose assets exceed $1 billion, with most proceeds directed toward healthcare. The state's official summary estimates temporary receipts totaling tens of billions of dollars, alongside a possible recurring decline in income-tax revenue of under $1 billion annually.

Voters will decide the measure on November 3, 2026. The outcome will determine whether California introduces the proposed wealth tax; Huang's willingness to pay does not establish his eventual liability.
