OpenAI offers academic labs sponsored access to GPT-Rosalind

Eligible US university labs can receive up to 30 free seats for 12 months, with access to GPT-Rosalind requiring approval.

OpenAI

OpenAI introduced the Rosalind Academic Plan on October 15 to subsidize AI tools for life sciences research. Eligible university labs in the United States can receive as many as 30 Business Standard accounts free for a maximum of 12 months.

The offer includes other advanced OpenAI models within the plan's usage limits. GPT-Rosalind requires approval through the company's trusted-access process, and the program excludes API access. OpenAI said research data submitted under the plan is excluded from model training by default.

GPT-Rosalind specializes in biological research, with applications including drug development, protein design and antibiotic resistance. Its accompanying Rosalind Workbench connects researchers with scientific tools. OpenAI said academic labs are already exploring uses in protein research and neurodegeneration.

Principal investigators and lab leaders can apply for their groups. Institutions with an existing OpenAI Enterprise agreement must use their university's access process. OpenAI reviews institutional eligibility, leadership credentials and proposed research before granting access.
