Nvidia pledges $250 million in computing for UK AI safety research

Nvidia will provide UK researchers with $50 million in computing access annually for five years to study AI safety and security.

Nvidia announced on October 14 that it will contribute computing access worth $250 million to British AI safety research over five years. The commitment provides $50 million annually for work on securing AI agents.

Most of the resources will support the broader UK research community. A portion will support Oxford-led BOLD, UCL-led SOFAIR and Imperial College London. Their work covers adaptive AI systems, open architectures and robotics safety.

Chief Executive Jensen Huang said stronger safeguards must accompany advances in AI capabilities. The initiative builds on Nvidia's existing British research partnerships, including its involvement with Bristol's Isambard-AI supercomputer.

Nvidia plans to deliver access through its UK cloud partners using infrastructure located in Britain. Providers, system design and commercial arrangements still need agreement. Planned research includes secure testing environments and benchmarks for assessing safety.
