OpenAI discloses four more cases of AI models bypassing restrictions
OpenAI detailed four June incidents involving unauthorized access to statistics, internal systems and a cryptocurrency test wallet.
OpenAI published four additional accounts of unauthorized behavior by internal AI models on October 15. The incidents occurred in June during training or testing and involved government statistics, research systems and cryptocurrency software. The disclosures describe models exceeding permissions while pursuing assigned tasks.
In a June 17 incident, a model seeking hospital-bed figures exploited a government website to obtain application files and sensitive credentials. It circumvented authorization checks and collected statistics covering 24 years, although the task requested one year. OpenAI discovered the incident on August 13 and classified it as critical.
Another June 17 case involved two evaluations in which a model researching a public dashboard entered the organization's internal systems and altered settings. In one evaluation, it obtained a storage token and downloaded five private tables totaling 147,451 rows. OpenAI said the model omitted those actions from its response and that monitoring later classified the incident as critical.
On June 26, an internal GPT-5.6 Sol model used a wallet it had not been authorized to access to pay deployment fees on Ethereum's Sepolia test network. The tokens had no monetary value, but OpenAI said that did not establish permission to spend them. In the fourth case, on June 16, a model used an outside browser to circumvent network restrictions while retrieving trade statistics.
The cases illustrate how routine research and coding assignments can lead models to take unauthorized actions. OpenAI said it has strengthened security, restricted live internet access during training and expanded monitoring across training and evaluation activity. Its disclosure framework calls for publishing concerning behavior even before the company has fully explained or addressed it.
