Anthropic appoints physicist Christopher Stubbs to its governance trust

Harvard physicist Christopher Stubbs has joined Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust, which can appoint a majority of the company's board.

Anthropic

Anthropic announced on October 21 that Christopher Stubbs has joined its Long-Term Benefit Trust. The Harvard physicist is the first person from his field to serve on the body.

Stubbs led Harvard's science division from 2018 through 2024. His research includes participation in the 1998 discovery that cosmic expansion is accelerating. He also belongs to JASON, a scientific advisory group serving the US government.

The trust has authority to select most members of Anthropic's board. Its trustees operate independently from management and investors, helping the public benefit corporation balance business objectives with its broader mission.

Stubbs joins chair Neil Buddy Shah, national security specialist Richard Fontaine and former Federal Reserve leader Ben Bernanke. The trustees advise company leaders and directors on consequential choices, including AI's risks and social effects. Anthropic also highlighted Stubbs's recent work on keeping research reproducible when AI systems produce inconsistent answers.
