Anthropic gives six METR evaluators expanded internal access

Anthropic has embedded six METR staff members with broad internal access and publication rights subject to limited redactions.

Anthropic

said on October 15 that six employees from the nonprofit evaluator METR have begun working with broad access inside the company. They receive equipment, workspace and internal systems access comparable to Anthropic’s own risk assessment staff.

METR can publish assessments without Anthropic vetoing them. Anthropic can require narrowly defined redactions, including protections for customer information and privileged legal material. METR may publicly discuss whether those removals were justified without disclosing the protected information.

The arrangement follows Anthropic’s September commitment to strengthen outside scrutiny. The company said evaluators need access to sensitive information to understand risks that public disclosures cannot fully explain. Its program has three levels, with METR receiving the deepest access.

Other partnerships remain more limited. SecureBio is reviewing the chemical and biological weapons section of Anthropic’s August risk report under the first tier, which requires publication approval. Anthropic said it hopes to expand evaluator access over time and is discussing additional partnerships, including with Hugging Face.
