Zuckerberg explains Meta’s $100 billion-plus push to control its AI technology

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta committed enormous sums before its new models were proven, pursuing control over infrastructure, software and AI products.

Mark Zuckerberg said Meta committed to an AI investment potentially reaching $100 billion to $200 billion before knowing whether its models would succeed. Speaking alongside AI chief Alexandr Wang in an October 12 interview, he described an effort spanning chips, computing facilities and models.

Zuckerberg said Meta’s Prometheus computing cluster in Ohio is expanding beyond one gigawatt, while Hyperion in Louisiana is planned to reach five gigawatts. Wang said the long development process requires major spending decisions before teams can establish whether their approach works.

The strategy follows years of frustration with restrictions imposed by smartphone platforms. In a 2024 company statement, Zuckerberg said Apple’s control had limited Meta’s products and helped shape his support for open computing ecosystems. He argued that Meta needed reliable access to technology without competitors deciding what it could build.

Meta’s latest product step came October 12 with the introduction of Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full. The company made Wonder available through its model API and Muse Code, with Full available to Muse Code subscribers. Meta said Wonder would next reach its Muse assistant, starting with subscribers.
