Zuckerberg explains how Wang helped shape Meta’s AI rebuild
Mark Zuckerberg said an early call and a follow-up memo from Alexandr Wang helped establish the strategy behind Meta’s AI overhaul.
Mark Zuckerberg said a roughly 44-minute conversation with Alexandr Wang helped lay the groundwork for rebuilding Meta’s AI operation. Wang sent a detailed memo two days later recommending a small team of exceptional researchers, Zuckerberg said. The approach shaped recruitment for Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Zuckerberg said Meta was dissatisfied with the direction of Llama 4 and was willing to rebuild its team. He also recalled asking Wang whether the effort would succeed as they discussed spending roughly $100 billion to $200 billion late last year. Those figures described the scale of their discussion, rather than a newly announced investment agreement.
Wang’s move became public in June 2025, when Scale announced a Meta investment valuing the company above $29 billion. Scale said its founder would join Meta while retaining his board seat. The agreement also expanded the companies’ commercial relationship, giving Meta a closer connection to a supplier of AI training data.
Meta introduced Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on October 12, describing them as its strongest models so far. Wonder became available through the company’s model API and Muse Code, while Wonder Full launched for Muse Code subscribers. Meta said Wonder would next reach its Muse personal assistant, starting with subscribers, and promised additional safety evaluation results.
