Musk’s SpaceXAI scheduled for NYC Council AI safety hearing after subpoena
New York City officials say SpaceXAI agreed to testify on October 16 after missing an earlier AI safety hearing and facing a subpoena.
Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI is scheduled to face questions about AI safety at an October 16 hearing in New York City. Council Speaker Julie Menin said the company agreed to participate after lawmakers sought to compel its appearance. The technology committee scheduled the session for 10 a.m.
The Council issued its subpoena on September 28, but SpaceXAI did not attend the October 5 hearing, officials said. The Council then warned that it would seek enforcement in state court. Officials said the company requested an October 7 meeting and subsequently committed to testify.
Representatives of OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta participated in the earlier hearing alongside former industry researchers. That session examined AI risks and possible public protections. Menin has argued that companies cannot be left to police themselves.
Technology committee chair Carmen De La Rosa said lawmakers want answers about privacy, safety measures and protections for whistleblowers. Council members outside the committee will also be able to question the company.
