Anthropic defends AI misuse monitoring as it opens Singapore office

Anthropic co-founder Benjamin Mann defended customer-use oversight in Singapore, citing AI’s potential for harmful applications. The company opened its Singapore office on October 14, its fifth location in Asia-Pacific.,

The company’s Enterprise Frontier Safeguards program outlines how monitoring can coexist with business privacy requirements. Announced September 1, it allows monitoring data to remain in customer-controlled cloud storage. Automated systems identify suspected misuse and send alerts to customers, without requiring Anthropic employees to review the underlying material.

Anthropic said sophisticated abuse can span multiple accounts and sessions, making isolated checks insufficient. It also acknowledged that retaining sensitive information creates obstacles for businesses in regulated industries. In Singapore, the company says Claude Code has been adopted by over 1,500 GovTech engineers and other technical employees.,

Anthropic also announced an agreement with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information covering AI testing, security and adoption. Planned work includes technical exchanges on evaluating models and responding to incidents. Separately, the company plans to introduce its enterprise safeguards in stages this fall.,
