OpenAI engineer reportedly arrested over alleged conference room recording device
An OpenAI engineer reportedly faces a federal charge over a concealed recorder, while the company says it fired an employee following an internal investigation.
An OpenAI engineer reportedly was arrested on allegations that he planted a recorder in a room used by company executives. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was reportedly taken into custody on October 9 and appeared in federal court on October 13.
The criminal complaint reportedly describes a device discovered September 30, concealed behind a television and connected through USB. Prosecutors allege the room hosted discussions about confidential research and business plans. Those accusations have not been proven in court.
OpenAI said its AI helped examine a hidden recorder and connect it to an employee, whom it dismissed. The company said it had found no indication of improper access to, or removal of, customer information, source code or model weights. OpenAI said it would continue assisting the FBI as the investigation proceeds.
