Amazon demonstrates how to find TorchNeuron bottlenecks on Trainium

Amazon's new profiling tutorial shows how combining operations reduces device execution time in a small Trainium test.

Amazon AI

Amazon published a TorchNeuron performance tutorial on October 21. It explains how developers can identify slow operations on AWS Trainium by connecting PyTorch measurements with hardware execution traces.

The walkthrough compares three versions of RMSNorm, a normalization operation. Separate arithmetic operations consumed 2.355 milliseconds of device time, compared with 403.3 microseconds for the built-in fused operation and 375.5 microseconds for compiled code.

The faster versions combine the calculation into one hardware dispatch, eliminating gaps between separate operations. These measurements cover the tutorial's small example rather than an entire AI model.

TorchNeuron lets PyTorch workloads use Trainium through a native backend. The tutorial pairs PyTorch's profiler with Neuron Explorer to show where software scheduling and chip execution consume time.

Reproduction scripts are available in the project's examples directory. A planned second installment will examine individual hardware engines and distinguish computation limits from memory limits.
