Waymo targets Toronto robotaxi service in 2028
Waymo plans to begin mapping Toronto streets with human drivers as it prepares for a Canadian ride-hailing service targeted for 2028.
Waymo announced plans on October 16 to bring driverless rides to Toronto, targeting its first passengers in 2028. The company said it will invest in facilities and employment as it prepares to enter Canada.
Vehicles operated by human drivers are expected to begin traveling through Toronto in the coming days. Waymo plans detailed street mapping followed by testing with trained specialists at the wheel. The work will evaluate how its driving system handles local conditions.
Toronto-based Element Fleet Management will support fleet operations. Waymo said the partnership and other collaborators will create hundreds of positions over time, including vehicle upkeep, test driving and customer support. Its existing Canadian relationships include investor Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and manufacturing partner Magna International.
The immediate work centers on mapping and validation before passenger service begins. Waymo presented 2028 as its target for welcoming riders, rather than announcing a specific opening date.
