Tolan raises $30 million for its AI companion app

Union Square Ventures is leading a $30 million investment in Tolan, which combines AI companionship with help managing everyday tasks.

Tolan has secured $30 million in financing led by Union Square Ventures, with existing backer Khosla Ventures participating. The investment supports an AI companion that offers conversation and assistance with everyday life.

Union Square Ventures said more than 250,000 people were expected to use Tolan during October. It also said users had held over 70 million conversations with their companions during the preceding year. Those figures come from the investor's announcement and are not independently audited.

The investor described users turning to Tolan for grocery shopping, children's party planning and family coordination. Those examples show how the product combines ongoing companionship with practical assistance. Union Square Ventures said its investment backs that expansion into daily activities.

Tolan also plans to introduce a free tier to broaden access, its chief executive, Quinten Farmer, said. The additional financing is intended to support that effort and expand the app's uses.
