Nvidia’s financing role grows as AI infrastructure companies face funding pressure
Nvidia’s investments in AI infrastructure are drawing scrutiny as the chipmaker reportedly considers additional funding for Australian operator Firmus.
Nvidia is reportedly discussing an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars in Australian data center operator Firmus after the company withdrew its planned stock listing. The discussions put renewed attention on Nvidia’s role in financing businesses that use its chips. A completed investment has not been confirmed.
Nvidia has already disclosed substantial backing for another AI cloud provider, CoreWeave. In January, it announced a $2 billion stock investment alongside an expanded partnership targeting more than five gigawatts of computing infrastructure by 2030. The companies said Nvidia’s financial resources would help CoreWeave secure sites, electricity and buildings.
The arrangement illustrates how Nvidia’s business extends beyond supplying processors. It also invests in customers and helps them develop the infrastructure needed to deploy its hardware. CoreWeave’s announced plans include adopting successive Nvidia computing systems, while the reported Firmus discussions remain an unconfirmed potential addition to that financing role.
