US regulators review claims that Tesla robotaxis speed through school zones
NHTSA is evaluating a petition alleging Tesla robotaxis exceed school-zone speed limits before deciding whether to open a formal investigation.
US vehicle safety regulators are reviewing allegations that Tesla robotaxis drive above posted limits when school-zone restrictions are active. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is evaluating a petition seeking a formal investigation, rather than announcing a completed finding of a defect.
The petition concerns 2026 Model Y and Cybercab vehicles. The petitioner supplied links to three videos to support the allegations, which remain unproven.
The review comes alongside a separate federal examination of Cybercab safety certification. NHTSA announced that inquiry in September after Tesla deployed the vehicles commercially in Austin, saying it would examine the basis for the company’s claim that Cybercab meets federal vehicle standards.
For the school-zone allegations, NHTSA will assess the submitted material before deciding whether to approve the requested investigation. The petition review does not itself establish that a recall or other corrective action is warranted.
