US orders civilian federal agencies to remove DeepSeek technology
A Homeland Security order bars civilian federal agencies from buying DeepSeek technology and requires its removal, including third-party implementations.
The Department of Homeland Security has ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek technology from their computer systems. The directive also prohibits purchases of covered products and services. The notice became publicly available October 19 ahead of its October 20 publication.
The restrictions cover DeepSeek, affiliated businesses and third-party software or services built using its technology. That extends the order beyond the company's own chatbot to other vendors that incorporate its models. DHS issued the restrictions under federal supply-chain security law.
The order governs civilian federal technology systems and procurement, rather than imposing a nationwide consumer ban. Implementation requires affected agencies to address both existing deployments and future purchases, including covered technology supplied through other companies.
