Biohub and federal partners expand AI biology effort to $1.8 billion

Biohub's expanded initiative combines funding, computing and biological datasets, including resources created through earlier federal research spending.

Biohub announced an expanded collaboration on October 7 with the Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health and technology companies. The $1.8 billion effort combines financial commitments with data, computing resources and measurement technology.

DOE plans to contribute more than $500 million over five years. NIH will coordinate access to research resources developed through earlier federal spending exceeding $500 million. Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and Meta together are committing $300 million.

The expansion builds on Biohub's $500 million commitment to its Virtual Biology Initiative, announced in April 2026. Its goal is to develop data that can train models to predict biological behavior. Biohub said such models could eventually help scientists investigate disease through digital experiments.

The partners plan to measure cellular responses across additional cell types and experimental conditions. Biohub and NIH will also prepare existing datasets for model training. The intended outcome is an openly available research resource supporting predictive biology..
