Anthropic proposes 5% equity allocation for new public benefit fund

Anthropic plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund, pending shareholder approval, with potential increases as its valuation grows.

Anthropic

Anthropic announced October 18 that it plans to allocate 5% of its equity to a new fund supporting public benefit initiatives. The commitment requires shareholder approval. Its board could authorize another 2% for each 50% valuation increase above a designated baseline.

The company will own the fund through a limited liability company. Possible uses include nonprofit grants and payments to selected populations. Anthropic said the fund's equity would not finance lobbying or political contributions.

The initiative builds on charitable equity commitments by employees and founders. Together, those pledges and the new allocation would earmark approximately one-fifth of Anthropic's shares for public benefit, the company said.

Anthropic plans to disclose governance arrangements and valuation thresholds over the coming months. It also intends to publish an assessment of its progress toward its public benefit mission.
