Figma introduces Specs to guide AI agents and opens code layers beta

Figma is adding shared specifications for teams and AI agents while expanding access to tools that generate and edit code on its canvas.

Figma introduced Specs, a document tool that keeps project instructions alongside designs and gives AI agents shared context. The company also opened its code layers feature to broader testing on October 15.

Specs can exist independently or sit inside Figma Design files and FigJam boards. Teams can combine written requirements with visual references, while connected coding agents can create, read and revise those documents.

The tools bring written decisions, visual work and executable prototypes into a common workspace. With code layers, users can ask Figma’s agent to generate code from a description or design, then request changes to an existing layer.

Specs is entering open beta through a gradual rollout across Professional, Education, Organization and Enterprise plans. Figma says access may arrive at different times for members of the same organization, and manually editing a spec does not consume AI credits.
